Hello, I'm Randy and this is my story!
April 30th, 1987 is when I entered the world. I don’t remember much (read: anything) about that day. But it was the start of my journey and therefor perhaps the most important day of my life.
Kitesurfing is expensive and because computers have always been like second nature to me I started studying how to build website so I could sell them and make enough money to buy kites. I studied hard, earned money, bought a laptop, studied some more and finally got to sell my first website to my big cousin. I never got to the total amount of money I needed to by a full quiver of kites (there was no second hand market at the time) but I did learn how to work with software like photoshop, illustrator and the basic languages like HTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL. It was the foundation to become the person I am today.
A way for people to connect with each-other on the internet. A social platform where you could stay up to date with people from your school and even when you move on to the next school you can remain in touch with your friends. I created the idea, marketing and promotion, management and all the networking. My partner did the web-development but after having the platform weeks away from launching, being 90% done, his paid job demanded to much of him and he quitted the project. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened there if we did continue. Remember, Facebook launched in 2004
Finished with school! I’ve never been a big fan of the schooling system for people like me.
Starting out at HAVO/VWO I quickly dropped down one level each year until I graduated. Doing what I love has always been more important to me then sitting inside, learning about stuff I probably never use.
I’ve always loved water sports and kitesurfing was my dream but only being 16 years old it’s a very expensive hobby. On a holiday with my parents they paid me my first lesson and once I got a taste of the power of a kite, I was hooked!
I’ve always had a big passion for sport. I tried all of them and have been talented at most of them. So when I had to ask myself what I wanted to do with my future as a 16 year old, sport was the only answer. So I enrolled myself into a school that was focussed on sports, teaching and coaching.
One year after starting kitesurfing I got my first sponsor and not long after I was spending the winter in Brazil, training and preparing for the upcoming season, trying to make it as a full time pro.
After traveling nine to ten months a year I had to make a choice, do I continue my study or am I committing myself 100% to kitesurfing, traveling the world, learning new languages and meeting amazing people every single day? Can you guess what I chose?
I’m extremely competitive by nature. Reaching the highest level in what I do is my only goal. After two years of kitesurfing I reached the absolute top and got to compete with the best in the world.
I’ve never been the best in the world but I did come very close! An amazing experience to compete at the highest level and getting results.
I received an offer in my mailbox through my website if I wanted to be the main star in a Nescafe TV commercial airing in Greece, Hungary, Cyprus and Bulgaria. An experience of a lifetime!
I always excelled at marketing myself within the sport world and I wanted to create an online platform that would allow my fellow athletes, photographers, magazines and even brands to communicate together. As an athlete it’s important to get exposure and being able to show that to your sponsors so they see what they actually pay you for, especially when these sponsors are not so involved within the sport business.. Stock07 would do all of that. We where already beta-testing everything and started to accept test users but like Friendsplanet, the same partner quitted our project when it was 90% finished. I was in the riders comity, representing the worlds best surfers.. Everything was there to make this project a success but I wasn’t hungry enough to start over with someone else.
At the end of 2006 I broke my ACL, a ligament in my left knee. After one year I decided I should get an operation and was out of the running for almost 9 months. In this period I discovered poker, especially on-line. I dedicated most of my time to study this game and found a new passion.
After my operation and nine months of recovery training I traveled back to Brazil and started preparing for the upcoming competition season. This video was shot in that period and I was ready to compete again!
What started out as a fun project, buying a house in Brazil, turned out to be a serious step in the direction my future was going. Getting tired of dealing with sponsors who don’t care about you made me not want to go back on (kitesurf traveling) tour and instead stay in paradise!
My last trip to Mauritius (see video) with my main sponsor was what made me decide to quit competing and dealing with sponsors. Discovering poker and the way my sponsors treated me made me loose all motivation to continue. Time to move on!
Taking that leap of faith into the unknown and trying to make a constant living gambling. Turns out it is a lot less gambling then most people expect it to be and it’s a similar to playing the stock market and investments but with a higher edge.
I did coaching on school, teaching sports and every now and then helping people with their tricks in kitesurfing or younger athletes with their personal marketing but I really got into regular coaching with poker. One friend I coached for a couple of years has had major success in poker and at the day of writing this (jan 2017) he is still competing at the highest level of online poker.
To get a visa in Brazil you have to invest in the country. My girlfriend at the time wanted to open up a restaurant but without any experience we settled for a sandwich and smoothie bar, Gecko!
Four months after opening the season was over. Gecko only made a very small profit but the amount of hours and work we had to invest was so to much compared to the return, especially because I could play poker. The next year we didn’t open again and ended up selling the business with a big loss.
When my relationship ended so did my life in Brazil. After five years of traveling the world and five years living in Brazil I moved back to the Netherlands and started my new life.
Meeting Iratxe, the girl from Spain, is why I am the person who I am today. She is the best person I ever encountered and showed me what doing good really means.
If you would have told me at the beginning of 2016 that I would become a vegan, let alone become a vegan activist I wouldn’t have believed you. It’s not about what you eat. It’s about the person you are. I like to see myself as someone compassionate, caring and being an ethical human being.
Veganism is about doing the least amount of harm possible without harming yourself.
I discovered my new passion through veganism. I want to go down in history as a guy who influenced people and helped change the world. Starting itsnotsalad.com I wanted to show the world that being a vegan doesn’t mean you only eat salad. Within a few weeks I already changed my concept and started doing street interviews. A new passion was born.
The last two years of my life I’ve been living without much passion for my work or life. I didn’t know what was wrong at the time but once I discovered that I didn’t really love what I was doing any longer I quitted and started thinking about where I want my future to go.
17th of Sept, an awakening. I know, it sounds so cliche but I can’t describe it any other way. I knew, with 100% clarity, what I wanted to do with my life. I realised that the thing that brings me ultimate happiness was helping others. Ever since this day my life changed with such a rapid pace, check it out for yourself in this timeline.
in 2016 I decided to dedicate my life to change the world by educating and inspiring regular consumers. Everyone is capable of caring but some care more then others, our job is to raise consumer awareness, provide solutions and make them care more..
After the launch of my first video from #ProjectLillyta I spend most of time promoting and recruiting. 10 days later we where a team of 10 people who where interested in working together, creating content and start with the launch of this project.
After quitting my career as a poker player I started #ProjectLillyta. Lillyta wasn’t going to generate any money for at least the next two to three years so what could I do to make enough money so I could realize my dreams of building Lillyta? RandyMEDIA was born and I could use my community building, marketing and social media skills to good use. Together with a team we focus on helping smaller enterprises become relevant again through the use of social media platforms.
Helping is what brings me the biggest joy in life, even if I don’t get anything in return (funny secret is that this mindset actually brings you more). To help me practice my skills, create good content and grow my business I started a new YouTube channel where I aim to inspire others and help them out with their problems in both life and business.
Talking and debating is what Iratxe and I love to do. If there is one thing we are good at together is talking :-). De vraag maar show is a show for people between 10 and 25 years old who have questions about life. They ask, we answer. We help them with their questions and they help us do something we love!
To reach your goals you have to start and work towards them. My goals to motivate and inspire people made me go out and start motivating and inspiring people. Dutch local youth centre Datsja invited me to come and speak.
Getting to the top takes a lot of effort, patience and study. It’s a constant process of learning, testing, adjusting and repeating that process over and over again. It’s really that simple. Then combine time and talent and you have the formula for success.
As a poker player you’ll have to deal with a lot more then just ‘a game’. Understanding the game of poker only takes a few seconds to learn, but a life to master. Being a professional poker player, is like[…]
